Tsuruhashi Japanese BBQ, Kearny Mesa
06/08/07Yakiniku - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yakiniku
What is Tsuruhashi and why is itone of the best Best "Japanese Style BBQ" restaurant in San Diego?
1) umm it's like 1 of 2.
2) the care and quality of the meat is absolutely exquisite.
If you are a fan of thin strips of fabulous cuts of top quality meat and if you like to cook them to YOUR liking then you will have the most amazing time @ tsuruhashi.
Much different then a cook your own grill place we kare accustom to. The tables have small gas grills inbedded but they also use charcoal to add to a wonderful flavor to the food. NOTE: these are small grills you sit and cook on folks so no need to worry about your chin hairs being charred!
Tsuruhashi is a wonderful environment to eat such fabulous food and it really is a fabulous price for the quality. A very interesting menu selections that will undoubtedly have you trying something you havent had or thought about having before.
I believe i counted about 11 tables and i cant imagine there will ever not be a small wait (20 minutes). I am definitely recommending going with no more then 4 people and 2 is about perfect for the cook it and eat realtime setup.
'Kobe' style and even the other cuts of prime aka 'the next step down' was PHENOMENAL. Imagine plates of raw rib-eye to skirt steak to short rib to pork cheek. The rib-eye's and short rib marbling was amazing to see.
The meat appeared to just be lightly salt and peppered and was so was so incredible it was hard for me to even try any of the unique and delicious sauces paired with each cut of meat.
Of course everything is cooked to perfection because YOU COOK IT! For the finale we skipped the desert and had the prime rib-eye tataki! Was not disappointed!
Total bill w/ an order of vegetables, two bowls of rice, tea, and tip was $70. Considering the quality of the fare, my tea was never empty and I never waited for another plate of meat to cook I would say my price was beyond reasonable.
If you think you like Japanese food and you believe you like BBQ. Then it is a SIN for you not to go to TSURUHASHI it's as close to a vintage Tokyo Yakiniku joint as you will find in San Diego. -
Shogun Kobe Tappan Steak and Sushi, Kearny Mesa
06/04/07How much fun is it to go to a restaraunt where the chef is chopping and dicing, setting a blaze the grill, flipping salt and pepper shakers into their hat and creating fauz volcanoes out of oil and onion slices about 12 inches in front of you and a group of strangers? Answer: ALOT.
Shogun Kobe formerly Kobe Misono is aplace Ive been going to for a long long time. It's the lowkey BeniHana and the food is phenomenal. It's not expensive however, it's not cheap. To me this is a great place to go with friends to get chicken, shrimp, scallops, filet, all prepared in front of you. Im a creature of habit so I get the same ole same ole. Chicken and Shrimp, fried rice, edamame, green tear, miso soup and of course a beer. The food is fresh, cooked right in front of you and the sauces they come with are divine.
Ive had lunch and dinner there and would recommend going with at least 2-4 people. I saw lots of interesting fru fru drinks with umbrellas and although they have a sushhi bar Ive never tried it. Sushi bar or flame grilling in yo face? Ill take the adventure thank you!

Mama's Bakery & Lebanese Deli, North Park
06/04/07Arguably the best flat bread I have ever had and yes Ive had some amazing flatbread in NYC. The food is plentiful and inexpensive. More of a take out or quick in and out for me but everything is wonderful. Hummus and falafels sandwhich with extra pickles (sometimes I get it with the Babaghanoush). The pickles are exquisite. I think for a healthy and delicious alternative for lunch you will get full and have yoru tastebuds in overdrive. I usually go vegetarian here but I have had the garlic chicken, foll madamas, chicken shwarma, beef and about everything else they offer but over the years it's easy for me to get the staple:
Falafel Sandwich, extra pickles with hummus or as I mentioned babaghanoush. The flat bread is too good.

El Borrego Restaurant, City Heights
05/07/07Barbacoa generally refers sheep slow cooked over an open fire or in a pit covered. At El Borrego Barbacoa refers to meat that was steamed until tender. On El Cajon Blvd reside a tiny lil mexican cafe who specialize in traditional mexican country food with a very focused and streamlined menu. There should be no reason to go there if you aren't prepared to have the lamb because it is their flagship entree. 1kilo of Barbacoa lamb, cilantro, onions, limes, sauces, fresh corn tortilla's with rice and beans. The atmosphere is quaint and rustic and they have a wonderful assortment of quesadillas and taco's but get the lamb. Another top quality meal recommendation that is easy on your checkbook and doesnt require you to dress up!

Cocina D. Sanchez, Normal Heights
04/26/07
Since the mid 90's I've enjoyed brunch at C. Sanchez and not once have I had a bad meal. Cerveza and Champagne brunches are served every Saturday and Sunday and they have a WIDE selection of traditional home cook Mexican dishes. It's suffice to say Cocina Sanchez is cozy and without pretense so if your looking for a place to see or be seen this is not the establishment. For anyone who wants a traditional mexican experience without the Old Town tourista flare or the El Torito chain then look no further then the wonderful little place in Normal Heights on Adamas Ave.
