Sister Pee Wee's Soul Food,
09/14/07Located in the Sherman Heights neighborhood, Sister Pee Wee's has been around since 1967.
We first heard about the place shortly after we moved into the neighborhood, and went there with a friend to check it out.
I had the fried catfish, my husband had smothered pork. Of course we shared. The catfish was really delicious, probably the best I've ever had, and the smothered pork was so tender you could cut it with a fork.
Sister Pee Wee's menu changes from day to day, depending on what she feels like cooking that day, and the sides are whatever's up on the board, so you might want to call ahead to see what's on the menu that day.
It's also a very small establishment, no tables, just a serving counter, so don't go with a big group of friends. This is a place to go with a friend or two.
After your meal arrives, if Sister Pee Wee isn't serving up food to some other people (with the help of her son), she likes to sit on the other side of the counter and chat and talk with her customers. This woman's been through a lot and has managed to maintain a positive attitude regardless.
Definitely check it out. The hours are somewhat limited, she shuts it down at 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 4:00 on Saturdays, closed on Sunday.
I do not have any connections with this business. I've been here once or twice.
